 PhpWebGallery "author" Script Insertion

Thursday, 20 September 2007

Description:
nights_shadow has discovered a vulnerability in PhpWebGallery, which can be exploited by malicious people to conduct script insertion attacks.

Input passed to the "author" parameter in picture.php is not properly sanitised before being stored. This can be exploited to insert arbitrary HTML and script code, which is executed in a user's browser session in context of an affected site when the malicious data is viewed.

Successful exploitation requires that "Comments for all" is enabled.

The vulnerability is confirmed in version 1.7.0. Other versions may also be affected.

Solution:
Edit the source code to ensure that input is properly sanitised.
